Warwick Greens
Green Party Society at the University of Warwick

As students we belong to the age group typically dubbed the most politically apathetic, but we at Warwick Greens believe students are just as politically aware and active than any other group - we just lack the right avenues through which we can express our ideas and beliefs.
Here at the Green Party Society, we offer a forum for students with similar political ideas to meet and discuss current poltical issues and to act upon them through campaigning, protesting and organising any other means of political activity. Whether you have ambitions to get into politics after you leave university, you have a general interest in Green politics, or you want to contribute to real change in society (or of course all three!), becoming part of our society gives you the opportunity to get involved and strive for those goals.
Warwick Greens can therefore provide you with a platform for debate, communication, action, and most importantly, to express your political views. The Green Party stands for a lot of different policies, and is not just a one-issue party. If you want to know more about the Party itself visit their website. There is also the Young Greens site which is the youth branch of the Green Party. You don't have to be a member of official Green Party groups, you just have to have an interest in politics and an urge for change.
What We Do
There are a number of ways in which the society engages and encourages student involvement in Green politics:
-
Pint & Policy: these are informal meetings where we discuss certain topics, allowing members a chance to share their ideas and contribute to debates. As individuals we don't always agree, but a collective political engagement is what is important. These a run on a bi-weekly basis.
-
Local Party canvassing: we like to get involved with the local Green Party and help them canvass both in and out of election time. We believe a close-knit association between our student base and the local party is integral to spreading the word of the Greens and learning the political tricks of the trade, whilst aiding the local party in gaining representation in councils and parliament.
-
Campaigns: whether it's an issue specific to the university (i.e. equal pay or the amount of waste produced), on a national level (i.e. Free Education Demo), or a global campaign (i.e. Environmental protests, TTIP), we believe in people power and the use of campaigns to spread worthy causes. These come by time-to-time and can either be kick-started by Warwick Greens or where we work in association with another society/association.
-
Speakers: we want to be able to bring in speakers (academics, politicians, journalists, and any supporters of the Greens or Green issues) to give talks on certain topics, ranging from climate change, governance and democracy, to the economic system. These are a great opportunity to learn from talented people, but also to question and engage with them.
